Chair’s Letter – October 2020
October has arrived! I smell fall in the air; bring on the pumpkin and cinnamon! The leaves are changing to rich colors of orange and red, and the weather is perfect. October is one of my favorite months. Not only is the weather quite pleasant for outdoor activities, but it is also Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This month is used to bring awareness to a disease that affects both women and men. Although this disease affects a higher percentage of women than men, men should be aware that they can also be affected. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), symptoms of breast cancer include any change in the size and shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast, nipple discharge other than breast milk, and a new lump in the breast or underarm. Although not all-inclusive, this list provides some of the most common symptoms. It is crucial for women (and men) to visit their primary care physician annually and receive a mammogram when advised. It is also important to conduct monthly breast self-exams. These are the best means for early detection, which saves lives.
October is also the month of the Chamber’s Annual Women’s Empowerment seminar. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the event will be held virtually this year. The event is Friday, October 16th (10 am-2 pm). We won’t let the virtual platform prevent us from having a great time. There will be phenomenal speakers, raffles, and many other goodies. Please don’t forget to register for October’s virtual membership luncheon on October 21st. You won’t want to miss out on the fun with the North County pumpkin carving contest. Our Facebook family will be the judges. Get your best designs ready! Contact the ladies at the Chamber office for more details about these events.
As always, your Greater North County Chamber of Commerce team is here for you. We are only a phone call away (314-831-3500). Be safe!
Your Chamber Board Chair,
Dr. Misty C. Farr, Pharm.D.
